The ISO 50001:2018 energy management standard is intended for manufacturing, commercial businesses or organizations to help manage the use of energy in their operation using a well defined framework. The standard covers all aspects of energy use and procurement. An Energy Management System or EnMS establishes a disciplined system and strategies to reduce energy costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Savings can result from lower operational costs while promoting environmental stewardship.

ISO 50001 is an internationally recognized framework for implementing an EnMS. The 50001 standard covers:
- Energy consumption
- Documentation, measurement and reporting energy use
- Variables that affect energy efficiency that are monitored by the organization
- Standard practices for design and procurement practices
An EnMS is a structured way an organization manages policies, and procedures to analyze and improve energy efficiency. Areas under consideration are maintenance practices, operational controls, product design and procurement of equipment, processes, and facilities. The EnMS is integrated into standard business processes across the organization.
As with most of the ISO standards, the 50001 standard uses the Plan-Do-Check-Act framework for continual improvement.
After completing the research and understanding the benefits to ISO 50001 registration, the two most asked questions are:
How much does it cost to get ISO 50001 certified?
How much time does it take to get ISO 50001 certified?
You can expect to pay the registrars about $1,500 per day (plus expenses); where the number of days depends upon the size of your organization. If you use consultants, you can expect a similar rate ($1000 to $2000 per day plus expenses – plus the registrar’s cost). Of course there are many factors, but in short:
- If you use a consultant, you can shorten the time to get certified, but the cost will go up.
- If you do it yourself, your cost will be less, but it will take more time.
- And this is our pitch, if you purchase a plan and download the EnMS manual, the 50001 Internal Auditor Check List, the Gap Analysis and the complete list of forms, procedures and work instructions you will save both time and money.
