U.S. Department of Energy Promotes ISO 50001

The Department of Energy (DOE) was instrumental in the creation of the ISO 50001 standard.  By adopting the ISO 50001 standard, organization promote the  best practices of energy efficiency.  The DOE supports its implementation that it believes will provide benefits businesses and the nation as a whole.

Below are various effort the DOE promotes

The Global Superior Energy Performance Partnership (GSEP)

Energy Management Working Group (EMWG) is trying to improve the acceptance of EnMS adoption in industry and commercial buildings. There are 11 other governments tasked to:

• identify and evaluate EnMS activities,
• opportunities, strategies,
• and best practices

Superior Energy Performance™ Certification

The DOE Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) was created to help manufacturers derive the most value from ISO 50001.  They have, along witth U.S. industrial companies, created the Superior Energy Performance™ (SEP) certification program. SEP certifies facilities that meet the ISO 50001 global energy management system standard and demonstrate improved energy performance. SEP provides guidance, tools, and processes for more sustainable benefits from ISO 50001. SEP certified facilities have achieved from 6% to 25% energy performance improvements over a three year period.  A review of the costs and benefits of SEP certified organizations has shown positive findings.

The Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP)

This program works with selected management promote energy awarness within organizations.  They have brought expertise at all levels of implementation to enable Federal agencies to meet energy-related goals. FEMP is exploring how ISO 50001 can support Federal agencies implementing the directive to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
